Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices)

Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women's Voices) is a multi-year initiative that aims to elevate the voices of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander women and girls in Australia's national conversation. Through storytelling and collaborative design it has uncovered and rewoven the rich, painful and powerful narrative of our planet's oldest matriarchal lines.
In joint effort with the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar, this story was transformed into a blueprint for the future and transformative positive change through the Implementation Framework Report that was published in 2022.
Capturing over 2,000 women and girls’ voices from right across Australia, the report brings
a well overdue First Nations gender-lens to issues from housing to education and economic participation. As part of its creation, there was a desire to use First Nations visual language and storytelling in the way the report was built.
With this in mind, the report is structured around a 'what if' narrative for the next generation of First Nations daughters. Its illustration style builds an abstract world that merges the Future State this report strives to build and First Nation people's deep connection with the spirits of the land and their ancestors - a spiritual realm also known as The Dreamtime.
